As a course in applied ethics, this capstone course focuses on a difficult conversation in a secular, liberal democratic America: are there limits to our hopes, dreams and even rights in having children? If there are limits, should they be enforced even when individuals disagree, and who should enforce them?
This capstone course aims to connect the “real world” or the world of action with some of the deepest arguments in America on how we ought to live. At stake in this course are more than the fascinating and even gripping dilemmas involved when a child may have four or five parents, what to do when a couple disagrees over whether to implant or destroy frozen embryos, etc. At stake also will be whether moral argument and moral living can bind us together as much as they can drive us apart. As a consequence, part of the course will feature consideration of strongly secular argument and strongly Christian argument.
